PING G15

STREET PRICE: $300
WEBSITE: ping.com
LOFTS: 9, 10.5, 12, 13.5;
Draw: 9, 10.5, 12

TECH TALK: The back edge’s external sole weight pad is designed to increase off-center hit stability. But the hidden boost to MOI comes from a lighter shaft that shifts the balance point toward the grip yet still allows for a heavier head and an unchanged swingweight. The theory: More mass delivered to the ball at the same speed.
PLAYER COMMENTS:
(M) “This is like a big porterhouse steak. It’s in front of you, and you’re salivating because it’s so meaty and satisfying, and there’s no way you’re sending it back.” … “It goes forever and is easy to hit.” … “There’s something to be said for being understated. It has a crisp sound with a ball flight that doesn’t balloon.” (L) “Very stout and strong at address.” … “Big head, but it’s not overdone. Easy to look at.
HOT: In a world full of overstated cases, Ping just makes things that we want to use because they work. Like this club. Plus, Ping fits you better than anyone.
NOT: For some, the crown’s alignment aid evokes Frito Bandito.

WOOD: TAYLORMADE R9/R9 TP

STREET PRICE: R9: $230; R9 TP: $300
WEBSITE: taylormadegolf.com
LOFTS: 13, 15, 17, 19
TECH TALK: This compact yet high-MOI steel head has a pull-face construction that reduces weld lines. Additional weight has been moved to the rear sole thanks to the 0.6-millimeter cast walls. An adjustable hosel allows players to change the lie and loft/face angle to eight settings for a custom trajectory. Both models come with a Fujikura Motore shaft.

PLAYER COMMENTS:
( L ) “It sits flush on the ground. The muted triangle shape is perfect.”
( M ) “Just awesome that you can tweak the lie angle.”
( H ) “It’s like a snazzy European sports car: good in looks and performance, but don’t let a part break or you’re going to pay.” … “They’re able to hide the technology in a traditional shape.”
HOT: TaylorMade is known for having perfected the sound and feel of a metal wood. Making an adjustable hosel nearly invisible on a fairway wood is a neat trick.
NOT: The adjustable feature is a great custom-fitting tool, but let a pro help you.

HYBRID: CALLAWAY DIABLO EDGE/DIABLO EDGE TOUR

STREET PRICE: $160
WEBSITE: callawaygolf.com
LOFTS: Diablo Edge: 20, 23, 26, 29; Diablo Edge Tour: 17, 20, 23
TECH TALK: The moment of inertia (MOI) on this year’s Diablo is 30 percent higher than that of last year’s model, to improve stability on off-center hits. The Diablo Edge features a wide, shallow profile and a low, deep center of gravity (CG) to help golfers launch the ball high. The Tour version has a slightly forward CG to give golfers with high swing speeds a boring trajectory.

PLAYER COMMENTS:
(H) “The weight and balance on this is ideal. I don’t think I can miss it.” … “Practically perfect. The ball just explodes off the face.”
(M) “A really penetrating, high ball flight. I crushed it.” … “Average looks but far above average performance on tight and fluffy lies.”
(L) “The misses aren’t too wild.” … “Good for someone who needs to get the ball in the air.”
HOT: Smarter manufacturing results in better off-center-hit performance. No one does forgiveness better than Callaway.
NOT: The flat sole makes it less versatile from really gnarly lies.

SUPER GAME IMPROVEMENT IRON:
ADAMS IDEA A7OS
< jQuery1271733925625=”316″ div> STREET PRICE: $700 (set of eight, graphite)
WEBSITE: adamsgolf.com
LOFTS: 6-iron: 28 degrees, PW: 44 degrees

TECH TALK:The hybrids in the 3-iron through 5-iron slots feature an extra 44 grams in the heel and toe for stability; the 6- and 7-irons are hollow-back middle hybrids designed to launch the ball high with spin. The short irons are conventional wide-sole cavity-backs.
PLAYER COMMENTS:
(H) “The 9-iron was easy to hit. It launched the ball high, and the head looked only a touch oversized.”
(H) “I know these are supposed to be for hackers, but I would recommend them to anyone with a 12-handicap or higher.”
(H) “It has ridiculous performance. I like the way they filled in the back of the 6-hybrid.”
HOT: The company’s experience in hybrids shines in this well-conceived integrated set. Call a7OS the smartphone of super game-improvement irons: It does a lot of things well that other clubs don’t.
NOT: It might be more helpful to high-handicappers if the set started with a 4-hybrid and ended with a gap wedge.

WEDGE:
TITLEIST VOKEY DESIGN SPIN MILLED

STREET PRICE: $120
WEBSITE: titleist.com
LOFTS: Seventeen loft and bounce combinations (48 to 64 degrees), three finishes (black nickel, tour chrome, oil can)
TECH TALK: During the “spin-milled” process, a circular cutting tool creates deep grooves with steep angles on the higher lofts (for more spin) and less severe angles on the lower lofts (for control on full shots). All 17 options feature a different sole design by Bob Vokey with tour-player input.
PLAYER COMMENTS:
( H ) “Best out of the sand. I didn’t even swing hard, and it came out.”
( M ) “If you don’t like this, you need to call your doctor and have your head examined. Anyone who can’t spin with this club can’t spin a top.”
( L ) “If you’re looking for consistent feel, this is the club for you.” …”You can open the face without having to be afraid of hitting it thin.”
HOT: Vokey’s understanding of wedge design is unrivaled, and these wedges reflect all he knows. The new C-C line provides an option for tour-level wannabes.
NOT: Full shots with these have a tendency to scuff some golf balls.

MALLET PUTTER:
ODYSSEY WHITE ICE SERIES

STREET PRICE: $180
WEBSITE: odysseygolf.com
STYLES: Eleven
TECH TALK: The firm, multimaterial insert is designed to produce consistent acoustics with all ball types. Eleven models, each plated with a dark nickel finish, achieve high moments of inertia (MOI) in classic and new shapes. A notable enhancement to the 2-Ball is a weight port the golfer can adjust.
PLAYER COMMENTS:
(L) “Pure roll. Watch how that ball logo tracks end over end toward the cup. Never wobbles a bit.”
(M) “Has a firmer feel than older 2-Ball models. Odyssey continues to improve on a good thing.”
(H) “Noticeably smoother with no jump off the face.”
HOT: The amount of laboratory research this company spends studying sound is unrivaled in the putter industry. Instead of relying on happy accidents, they set out to achieve specific pitch and damping parameters with this insert. Their shapes are always avant-garde, and this year’s ample line is no exception.
NOT: For all the effort that went into creating consistent sound, the tone of the Mini-T is noticeably different from the rest of the series

BLADE PUTTER:
TITLEIST SCOTTY CAMERON CALIFORNIA SERIES

STREET PRICE: $300
WEBSITE: titleist.com
STYLES: Four
TECH TALK: Milled from 303 stainless steel, the “honey-dipped” head comes from a chromatic baking process. Interchangeable sole weights allow factory matching of heavier head weights with shorter shaft lengths, and vice versa. Each model has a flared toe, and style differences include a plumber’s-neck hosel on the Monterey (above), a wider body on the Sonoma, a two-tier flange on the Coronado and a pear-shape flange on the Del Mar.
PLAYER COMMENTS:
(L) “Great feedback. You sense the slightest variation in contact. There are five sweet spots, and you feel them all.” … “Love the simple, classic look.”
(M) “Very pure, very beautiful.”
(H) “The compact shape helps me feel the position of the face.”
HOT: It seems simple, but an attractive new finish is a fine way to infuse excitement into a putter. No feature of a Cameron putter is ever gimmicky or superfluous.
NOT: Cameron’s website IDs the color of the paintfill in the sightlines as “French Vanilla.” C’mon, man.
